What is it?
Warts, also known as verruca vulgaris, are lumpy growths over the skin caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). The virus usually spreads via skin to skin contact.
What are the symptoms?
Warts manifest as small, fleshy bumps on the skin and mucous membranes. They can be noted in the arms, hands, fingers, elbows, soles, feet, and toes.
What to expect?
If you are diagnosed with warts you can consider doing the following things:
- Most warts wil disappear on their own, although it may take up to two years. Discuss treatment with your doctor if you do not want to wait for this.
- Avoid scratching the warts as this may hasten the spread to other areas.
