What is it?
A stye is a painful lump on the edge of the eyelid. It is caused by an inflamed gland and usually gets better on its own within two weeks. A stye is also called a hordeolum externum.
What are the symptoms?
A stye typically causes a red and painful lump on the edge of the eyelid. Often it progresses into a pimple with a yellow head. When the pimple opens usually the pain is gone.
What to expect?
Things you can try at home that may relieve symptoms:
- Use a warm compress. Soak a clean cloth in warm water and put it on the eye for around 10 minutes for a couple of times per day.
- Do not manipulate or try to pop the stye.
