What is it?
Lichen planus is a longstanding inflammatory condition that affects mainly the skin, mucous membranes, hair and nails. At present the cause is unknown; however, it is believed to be an autoimmune disorder, wherein the immune system attacks healthy cells.
What are the symptoms?
Lichen planus symptoms varies as to what area is affected; however, it can be the following:
- Skin bumps described as pinkish to purplish and flat over the arms, legs and genitals.
- Itchy rash.
- Mouth sores.
- Vaginal sores.
- Hair loss.
- Damage to the nail which can also manifest as nail bed discoloration.
- Nail loss.
- Darkening or redness of the skin.
What to expect?
Things you can do yourself in addition to treatment by your doctor:
- Try not to scratch the skin lesions.
- Some patients find that using a cooling compress on the skin relieves symptoms.
