What is it?

Gestational diabetes mellitus is a form of diabetes that develops during pregnancy. Diabetes is a condition wherein the sugar level in the blood is high. This type of diabetes often subside when the baby is born.

What are the symptoms?

In most cases of gestational diabetes mellitus no symptoms are noted. However, if symptoms occur, they may include the following:

  • Increased thirst.
  • Fatigue.
  • Frequent urination.

What to expect?

Things you can try at home if you have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes:

  • Follow a diet as advised by your antenatal care provider. Usually this diet involves eating plenty of whole meal products and avoiding food high in sugar.
  • Try to keep active and exercise regularly.
