What is it?
Balanitis is the inflammation of the foreskin and head of the penis. The cause of the inflammation can be skin conditions, poor hygiene, or use of harsh soaps over the penile area. It can also be associated with uncontrolled diabetes.
What are the symptoms?
Patients with balanitis often complain of redness and/or rash over the head of the penis or foreskin. Some may have foul-smelling discharge coming from the foreskin. Others may present with itchiness or discomfort in the affected area.
What to expect?
If you are diagnosed with balanitis, you can consider discussing the following subjects with your doctor:
- What treatment option is best suited for you?
- Do you need a stricter control of other medical conditions you may have, such as diabetes?
In addition to treatment by your doctor you can try the following things:
- Maintain proper hygiene.
- Avoid using harsh soaps.
